I'm not talking solo playing here or a three piece jazz album so these are not "recommendations" for this thread, just an observation that technically inferior sounds can be "perfect" for some. It's funny, I have a few faves for piano (a sonic synth 1 steinway preset) and epiano (MDA ePiano) that are technically unipressive but that play well for my rock ballad style and sit perfectly in my mixes. Well said that bigger is not always better. Got any rhodes or wurlitzers? I have a real good rhodes that I posted some time back but I would like to have one with tremolo in the interface (I have lounge lizard and EVP 73-but the other one I have is fuller.) I won't go into comparisons of all the other pianos, but I did compare it to the PMI Steinway D Classic and I will now erase both the 16 layer Steinway and the 1GB guy I just downloaded. Which just goes to show that bigger is not always better. Well gosh everyone-the one Jonas put up is much fuller than the big guy. MIDI makes it easy to add additional instuments or change tempo too. There's really very little first hand information about these systems. It does not say the Disklavier was used in the soundtrack, but doesn't really explain. Here's some YAMAHA PR about film and music: Still, all-in-all, IMO, the P120 patch#1 sample has the right amount of distortion for ragtime, which developed on less than concert grands. All my MIDI files play a YAMAHA P120 and also with WINDOWS Media Player, although "Stoptime Rag" requires a custom sample for the foot-stamp for a proper rendition. For reasons I am currently trying to figure out, some of the playback of other pieces didn't produce any sound, even on pieces using only patch #1. It was the one and only time I ever heard Joplin's "FigLeaf Rag" played acoustically and at the intended tempo. I visited a local dealer to learn about the MarkIV and she played one of my MIDI files ( from ) on it. ![]() Every piano is different, of course, and the best result is only obtained if the MIDI is created on the instrument it plays on. I haven't ever worked with a Disklavier or similar system, so cannot say what is fact and what is myth or where there might be room for improvement, such as autotuning or proprietary sampling/playback technology. So you can get acoutic piano with digital accompaniment. It's also worth mentioning that, at least the Disklaviers, have high-quality digital samples. The sound isn't limited by the fidelity of a recording. True, the Disklavier has the same limits as any other MIDI controlled equipment, but it's acoustic. ![]()
